Widefield online program allows kids to study at own pace
Courtney Kempe hasn’t seen her fine platinum wedding dishes for several years. But her kids are getting a better education because of it. The dishes were relegated to a packing box when she enrolled some of her children in Widefield School District 3’s online program. The china cabinet at home became the depository for books and homework, and her table their work space. They are among 166 students enrolled in D3 My Way, which allows students in first through 12th grade to take core classes online, electives such as music in their school building and work with teachers at a tutoring center or after hours by email. “Kids and their parents can structure their education like they want,” says Leslie Doolittle, the secondary math program manager. For example, one student did most of her classes online but went to her school building for extra reading. D3 My Way, unlike some programs, allows students to take nine-week blocks, so not as many courses have to be taken at once. It’s been a boon for military families, athletes in training, older students who must work, children with medical issues, those needing a personal learning environment, and others who find the flexible schedules and studying at their pace ideal. At home, they are only a keyboard or call away from talking over their lessons with a teacher. Or they can visit the tutoring center for extra help or to interact with other students. “I love the program,” says Kempe, whose husband is in the Army. “We used to home-school and I was overwhelmed by our frequent moves because it was difficult to keep up with all the states’ different curriculums and laws we had to adhere to.” This is the second year in D3 My Way for Paxton, 9, and the first for Piper, 7. The kids get As and Bs, but when they struggle with a lesson they quickly get help. “In traditional school, if the kids fail, that’s it. They go on to something else and never learn. But online they can take their time and master it.” During the day, they can also take breaks when they get bored or tired. “I never force them to sit at the table. But they always choose to keep going. There’s a lot of sibling rivalry.” Three of the younger children are not yet in the program. Parker is now in regular ninth grade so he can take biology and labs. The flexibility also allows the kids to be home with their dad when he is on leave from deployment. It doesn’t disrupt classwork because they still can study. On a recent morning, Paxton and Piper were at the tutoring center getting help with e language lessons. (The elementary center is in the SA Wilson School, 930 Leta Drive). “I like this school. You don’t have to get up really early and can have a nice breakfast like a waffle and stay up late sometimes,” Paxton says. Piper likes the online math and field trips, and also the special events held with other students at the tutoring center. The St. Patrick’s Day party was particularly fun. “We used lots of glue and glitter. I like crafts,” she says. Emily Cornell, an elementary teacher, is in the tutoring center two days a week, and can also work at home by phone, instant messages and email with her students. “We like the flexibility, too,” she says. There is one full-time teacher, and several part-time instructors for the program. The tutoring center is important, particularly in elementary school. “You lose something if you don’t have that face-to-face time,” Doolittle says. Another student who has found the online program beneficial is Olivia Hart, 13, a figure skater who trains at the Broadmoor Skating Club. She hopes to compete in the Olympics. Her mother, Cheryl Mortimer, notes that Olivia had tried another online program, taking advanced classes, but had hours of homework a night. D3 My Way allows her to take a couple of classes at a time in nine-week blocks. “I have a more open schedule and more time to practice my skating. I’m not so rushed like I was when I was taking four classes,” Olivia says. D-3 also has allowed her to use her five-days a week conditioning and figure skating training as PE. Janitelle Junior High is her base school and where she can take electives if she wants. Since D3 My Way is considered a program, not a separate school, she and the online students also take state assessment tests at their brick-and-mortar schools. Next year as a freshman Olivia plans to take her electives and some advanced core courses at Mesa Ridge High School. For now, she starts her online classes at home about 8 a.m., and works until 1 p.m. or so. Then she takes a break to skate and condition for a couple of hours, and then studies more later. “The teachers answer my questions right away. They are easy to get hold of when I need them.” She adds, “I really like the open schedule. It helps me pace my time and succeed more at everything. And I still get some time to hang out with my friends.”

UPDATE: Seattle fire claims former Widefield man, 4 sons
A former Widefield resident was killed on New Year’s Day along with four of his children when a fire tore through their apartment nestled in a Seattle suburb. David Thompson and four of his sons died a year and a half after they moved from the Colorado Springs area to start anew in Washington, said Josh Funkhouser, of Manitou Springs, Thompson’s friend of 15 years. Thompson’s wife, Lilly Reasor, was the only person to survive the blaze. She was being treated at a Seattle-area hospital for smoke inhalation and other injuries, said hospital spokeswoman Sherry Grindeland. Investigators are examining whether smoking in the apartment’s bathroom is to blame. Funkhouser remembered Thompson, who was known as “Moose” to his friends, as a “jokester” but also an “awesome father.” Thompson grew up in the Colorado Springs area and attended Widefield High School, said Funkhouser, who met him while the two worked at Two Men and a Truck, a moving company. When Thompson’s own moving business began to struggle, he moved his family to Redmond, Wash., where he was taking tests to become a firefighter and working as a maintenance man at the apartment complex where he lived. “This guy taught me how to take the heaviest chore in front of you and smile and laugh about it all the way through it,” Funkhouser said. “He was definitely someone that would stand out in a crowd and want to be standing out in the crowd.” Thompson met Reasor while still in Colorado, Funkhouser said. They had three children together, David, 6; Leviticus, 4; and Wyatt, 2; all of whom died in the blaze. Thompson, Funkhouser said, was “able to bring six kids together and to love one another and to respect one another.” Thompson had three children from an earlier marriage, one of whom, Tristan, 12, also was killed Saturday, the Seattle Times newspaper reported. His ex-wife, whom the Times identified as Chandra Kroeckel, and the two surviving children still live in Colorado Springs, Funkhouser said. “A lot of wonderful lives were taken out of this world,” Kroeckel told the Times, sobbing. “My heart just goes out to my son’s stepmother because she lost her husband and also her children.” A law enforcement official whom the Times did not name told the newspaper the investigation is focusing on whether the fire was started by ashes from marijuana and cigarettes the couple had reportedly smoked in the apartment’s bathroom earlier that night. Reasor had been flicking ashes from her cigarette into a tissue-filled trash can in the bathroom, the Times reported. A neighbor tried to warn Reasor about the danger, but Reasor dismissed her concern, the Times reported. Also, the couple had smoked marijuana repeatedly throughout the evening along with drinking beer. Investigators suspect the couple used a fan in the bathroom to rid it of the smell of marijuana, the newspaper reported. Further, the pipe and ashes had been left on the bathroom’s door while the fan was running, the investigator told the Times. Emergency officials received a call about the fire at around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. It quickly burned the two units above it. All three were heavily damaged and the apartments next to them have smoke damage, fire officials said. The fire sent people from 12 apartments running for safety, the Times reported, and neighbors had to keep Reasor from going back into the apartment. The building is part of a complex of three-story buildings in a wooded area just northwest of downtown Redmond. It is about two miles north of the Microsoft Corp. campus and about 12 miles east of Seattle. The buildings have smoke detectors but not sprinklers, which weren’t required when the complex was built in the mid-1980s, Redmond police spokesman Matt Peringer said. Funkhouser said the fire has been a dark beginning to the year. “It’s not just a small group of friends. It’s a whole community here in Colorado Springs that’s really missing out on him and his family,” Funkhouser said. Funkhouser’s brother, Benjamin Funkhouser, told the Gazette that Thompson’s father plans to have his son and grandsons’ remains flown back to Colorado, where services will be held. It is not known, though, when services will take place. — This story contains information from the Seattle Times and the Associated Press.

Man convicted of murder in Widefield teen's 2010 death
BUTLER, Pa. — A Pennsylvania man who previously lived in Colorado Springs has been convicted of third-degree murder for shooting a longtime friend in what he claimed was an accident. Twenty-year-old Eric Rutledge could face life in prison following his conviction Thursday in the November 2010 death of 18-year-old Courtney Daily, who was from the Widefield area. Rutledge had testified that he and Daily had handed the shotgun back and forth, discussing whether either of them would be able to shoot someone. Rutledge had told authorities he didn't know the gun was loaded but testified at trial that he had loaded the gun and taken the safety off. Defense attorney Alex Lindsay said Rutledge did not intend to kill Daily, noting they had ordered pizza minutes earlier. Daily had moved to Pennsylvania from Colorado the week before she was killed, according to her mother. She was staying at Rutledge's home in Seven Fields, about 20 miles north of Pittsburgh. Daily and Rutledge both had attended Mesa Ridge High School.

Insect-inspired camera captures wide field of view with no distortion
To create the innovative camera, which also allows for a practically infinite depth of field, the scientists used stretchable electronics and a pliable sheet of microlenses made from a material similar to that used for contact lenses. The researchers described the camera in an article published today in the journal Nature.
