The Splintered Mind: Self-Reported Vividness of Imagery and the Cortex
In 2002, I published an article critical of the generally weak-to-nonexistent relationships between self-reported vividness of imagery and performance on tasks psychologists have often thought to involve imagery, such as mental rotation tasks and tests of visual memory and visual creativity. Differences in subjective report about imagery, I suggested, may relate only poorly to real differences in imagery experience.

PC ALL DATA AVAILABLE: Mental image
Jump to: navigation, search A mental image is an experience that, on most occasions, significantly resembles the experience of perceiving some object, event, or scene, but that occurs when the relevant object, event, or scene is not actually present to the senses (McKellar, 1957; Richardson,1969; Finke, 1989; Thomas, 2003); however, there are, not infrequently, episodes, particularly on falling asleep (hypnagogic imagery) and waking up (hypnapompic), when the imagery, being of a rapid, phantasmogoric and involuntary character, defies perception, presenting a kaleidoscopic field, in which no distinct object can be discerned. [1] The nature of these experiences, what makes them possible, and their function (if any) have long been subjects of research and controversy in philosophy, psychology, cognitive science and, more recently, neuroscience.

What are the dimensions of olfactory talent? Everyone’s first guess—that smell sensitivity separates perfumers from the rest of us—is certainly wrong. What does set experts apart is the ability to think about odors in a certain way.
