Pretectal nucleus
The pretectal area, or pretectum, is a midbrain structure composed of seven nuclei and comprises part of the subcortical visual system. Through reciprocal bilateral projections to the retina, it is involved primarily in mediating behavioral responses to acute changes in ambient light such as the pupillary light reflex, the optokinetic reflex, and temporary changes to the circadian rhythm. In addition to the pretectum's role in the visual system, the anterior pretectal nucleus has been found to mediate somatosensory and nociceptive information.

EyeWorld: Diseases Of The Eye And Treatment: PUPILLARY REFLEXES AND THEIR ABNORMALITIES
PUPILLARY REFLEXESLight reflexWhen light is shone in one eye, both the pupilsconstrict. Constriction of the pupil to which light isshone is called direct light reflex and that of the otherpupil is called consensual (indirect) light reflex.

Pupillary Light Reflex pathway made simple
The pupillary light reflex is a reflex that controls the diameter of the pupil, in response to the intensity (luminance) of light that falls on the retina of the eye, thereby assisting in adaptation to various levels of darkness and light, in addition to retinal sensitivity. Greater intensity light causes the pupil to become smaller (allowing less light in), whereas lower intensity light causes the pupil to become larger (allowing more light in). Thus, the pupillary light reflex regulates the intensity of light entering the eye.

PUPILS: Pupillary Pathway
The optic nerve is responsible for the afferent limb of the pupillary reflex which senses the incoming light. The oculomotor nerve is responsible for the efferent limb of the pupillary reflex which drives the muscles that constrict the pupil.

VISUAL REFLEXES LIGHT REFLEX: In a normal human, exposure of light on to one eye will cause the constriction of both eye pupils. For example: if light is made to fall on the left eye and left eye pupil constricts, we say the DIRECT LIGHT REFLEX for left eye is POSITIVE.
