OAIster
OAIster was a project of the Digital Library Production Service of the University of Michigan University Library. Its goal is to create a collection of freely available, previously difficult-to-access, academically oriented digital resources that are easily searchable by anyone. OAIster harvests from Open Archives Initiative (OAI)-compliant digital libraries, institutional repositories, and online journals using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) protocol.
In early 2009, OCLC formed a partnership with the University of Michigan in order to provide continued access to open-archive collections through OAIster.

OAIster cashes in on interoperability | Meta World Peace
At the time this article was posted in 2007, OAIster had eclipses the 10 million records mark. Not too shabby! However, according to the OAIster website, this mark has reached over 25 million in 2013.

As many of you are probably aware, OCLC and the University of Michigan announced last January that OCLC was taking over the OAIster aggregation of metadata harvested from OAI-compliant repositories. The University of Michigan was no longer able to support it, and was looking for assistance in sustaining this valuable community resource.

The transfer of the OAIster database to OCLC's WorldCat is now complete, and OCLC will offer a free OAIster-only database view in 2010 to complement integrated WorldCat Access. Here's an excerpt from the press release: The University of Michigan and OCLC today announced that they have successfully transitioned the OAIster database to OCLC to ensure continued public access to open-archive collections, and to expand the visibility of these collections to millions of information seekers through OCLC services.
