Nubian Vulture
The Lappet-faced Vulture or Nubian Vulture (Torgos tracheliotos) is a mostly African Old World vulture belonging to the bird order Accipitriformes, which also includes eagles, kites, buzzards and hawks. It is the only member of the genus Torgos. The Lappet-faced Vulture was formerly considered monotypical, but now is separated into two subspecies. The nominate race lives throughout Africa. The subspecies T. t. negevensis, differing considerably in appearance from African vultures (as described below), occurs in the Sinai, the Negev desert, and probably north-west Saudi Arabia. It is not closely related to the superficially similar New World vultures, and does not share the good sense of smell of some members of that group.

As the largest vulture in Africa, the Lappet-faced vulture dominates other vultures when feeding and is even powerful enough to fend off a jackal! This impressive species is armed with a large and powerful beak, capable of tearing off the hides, tendons and other coarse tissue of its scavenged prey that are too tough for smaller scavengers. This enormous, broad-winged bird is easily recognised by its conspicuous size, bare, pink-skinned head and distinctive fleshy folds of skin, known as lappets, on the sides of its neck, for which it earns its common name. Torgos tracheliotus Other Names Nubian Vulture, African Black Vulture, King Vulture Vautour oricou Ohrengeier Buitre Orejudo Örongam Oorgier Avvoltoio orecchiuto World: S Israel and the Arabian Peninsula and in Africa from Senegambia east to Ethiopia and Somalia then S through Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania to eastern Zaire. Below 15°S found throughout the continent except the southernmost tip of South Africa. Kenya: Found in open country up to 3000m, absent from the high rainfall areas in the W, densely forested regions and also from the coast. This is a large, broad winged Vulture with a very large and powerful beak. Other vultures often rely on Lappet-faced Vultures to open a carcass, they are also able to utilise parts of the body (skin, ligaments and bones) which other raptors can't eat. They occur in pairs on relatively small territories although they may gather in larger numbers around a big kill or at water holes. It is primarily a scavenger but it will kill small mammals if it needs to. Unlike a number of other African species it doesn't take human refuse and so isn't to be found around human habitation.
