North Park (Colorado basin)
North Park is a high, sparsely populated basin (approximately 8800 ft in elevation) in the Rocky Mountains in north central Colorado in the United States. It encompasses a wide valley in Jackson County rimmed by mountain ranges at the headwaters of the North Platte River and several smaller tributaries, including the Michigan River, Illinois River, and Canadian River. The valley receives its name from being the northernmost of the three large mountain valleys (or parks) in Colorado on the western side of the Front Range. The others are Middle Park and South Park respectively.
The basin opens out northward into Wyoming, in the direction of flow of the North Platte. On the east side, it is rimmed by the Medicine Bow Mountains, the Never Summer Mountains and Rabbit Ears Range to the south, and the Park Range to the west. The continental divide rims the Park along the south and west. The primary economic activities in the valley are cattle ranching and timber harvesting, although the latter has declined substantially in recent decades. The largest community in the valley is Walden, the Jackson County seat, that sits near the middle of the valley near the confluence of the Michigan and Illinois rivers. Smaller communities in the valley include the unincorporated hamlets of Gould and Rand.
The valley is crossed east-west by State Highway 14, which enters from the east over Cameron Pass, providing a link to the Poudre Canyon and Fort Collins. Highway 14 enters from the west over Muddy Pass which provides access to Steamboat Springs, and to Middle Park in the valley of the Colorado River. It is crossed north-south by State Highway 125, which enters from the north (from Wyoming) along the course of the North Platte. It enters from the south over Willow Creek Pass, providing access to the upper end of Middle Park near Granby. The valley along the Illinois River is the location of the Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge.

Arapahoe Basin, Colorado | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Arapahoe Basin (A-Basin or simply, the Basin) is a renowned ski area for alpine skiing high in the Colorado Rockies. The A-Basin East Wall has a summit elevation of 13,050 feet (3977m), making it the highest skiable terrain in North America. Due to its high altitude (at treeline) and its mostly north to northeast face, the Basin remains open for skiing much longer than most Colorado resorts, and often starts earlier as well. Arapahoe Basin is known for a clientel of hardcore, yet relaxed folks that like to shred. It sometimes stays open until July, though recent management has opted to close the resort earlier despite complaints from locals. A-Basin is located just below Loveland Pass. It therefore offers a spectacular view of the Continental Divide (which it borders) from the lifts. From the top of the East Wall and the North Pole there are great views of Lake Dillon, Breckenridge, Keystone, Montezuma and Loveland Pass. Located about 65 miles west of Denver, Arapahoe Basin is more convenient to local skiers than most Colorado ski resorts, although both Loveland and Eldora are somewhat closer, at 53 and 45 miles respectively. All three of these ski areas primarily serve local skiers, in contrast to the more distant resorts such as Aspen and Vail. About 250,000 skiers visit A-Basin annually. Known popularly as "the Basin" by locals, it has gained a reputation as a skier's paradise, although it is also known for its particularly cold days. During the warm and sunny spring season, many locals tailgate in a section of the parking lot (known as the "beach") just below the lifts. (Wikipedia)

South Park Basin, Colorado | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
South Park is a high intermontane grassland basin, approximately 10,000 ft (3,000 m) in elevation, in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado. It encompasses approximately 1,000 square miles (2789 km² or 640,000 acres) around the headwaters of the South Platte River in Park County approximately 60 mi (100 km) southwest of Denver. It is the southernmost of three such large mountain valleys in Colorado, along with North Park and Middle Park. The largest town in the basin is Fairplay, which sits near the northern end. Popular Culture Since the late 1990s, South Park has been best known for giving its name to the animated series South Park. Trey Parker, one of the creators of the South Park series, grew up in Conifer, about 40 miles (65 km) east of Fairplay. (Wikipedia)
