Émile Étienne Guimet
Émile Étienne Guimet (26 June 1836 - 12 August 1918) was a French industrialist, traveler and connoisseur.
He was born at Lyon and succeeded his father in the direction of his "artificial ultramarine" factory. He also founded the Musée Guimet, which was first located at Lyon in 1879 and was handed over to the state and transferred to Paris in 1885.
Devoted to travel, he was in 1876 commissioned by the minister of public instruction to study the religions of the Far East, and the museum contains many of the fruits of this expedition, including a fine collection of Japanese and Chinese porcelain and many objects relating not merely to the religions of the East but also to those of Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome.
He wrote Lettres sur l'Algerie (1877) and Promenades japonaises (1880), and also some musical compositions, including a grand opera, Tai-Tsoung (1894).

THE BLUE LANTERN: Emile Guimet's Promenades Japonaises
In 1880, Emile Guimet (1838-1918) published Promenades Japonaises, a book in which he described the arts of Japan as hieroglyphs, (a term he borrowed from poet Stephane Mallarme) so unfamiliar were Japanese methods to European eyes. Fifteen years before Siegfried Bing opened his revelatory Maison de l'art Nouveau in Paris, the wealthy and widely traveled industrialist from Lyon was urging his fellow Frenchman to consider the beauties of Japanese art.

Dressing up in Paris!: Week 8: Musée Guimet
So, we’re 8 weeks in to Project Dressing-up-in-Paris, and I have decided it is high time that there is some focus on current fashion trends themselves. One of the main trends for Spring-Summer 2013 is oriental, with Japanese-inspired tailoring and details appearing on the runways for Vera Wang, Prada, Etro, Emilio Pucci, Gareth Pugh, Haider Ackermann, Altuzarra – the list goes on! This being the case, I thought I’d do an oriental-themed shoot this week, and what better place to go than the National Museum of Asian Arts, also known as the Musée Guimet. Belt made from silk scarf The Musée Guimet was originally set up by industrialist Émile Étienne Guimet in Lyon, as a museum of the history of religion.
